Overcome with guilt

Pipa’s fury slowly melted away as she thought about Jackie’s situation. While she and Sem lived comfortably in their large home, surrounded by expensive things they barely used, Jackie had been struggling silently. The lie about Yale, the desperate attempt to change her life—it all painted a picture of someone who felt out of options.

Instead of punishing Jackie, Pipa did something unexpected. She stepped forward and pulled her into a hug. “Stealing is never the answer,” she said firmly, “but we’re not calling the police.” Sem looked at his wife in surprise, unsure of what she had planned next.
